How Will The Rankings be Ranked?

by Cheryl on October 18, 2010

I bet my friends in the Legal Marketing world were not surprised by today’s news on the ABA Journal website that the American Bar Association is probing lawyer raters .  I get questions almost on a weekly basis about them.  According to Mark Hansen, a reporter at the ABA Journal, AVVO , Am Law and Best Lawyers are at the center of a special committee’s focus, co-chaired by ABA Ethics Commissioner Donald Hilliker .

Rankings, of course, can be the bane of the existence of marketers and public relations professionals who are tasked with completing them.   The funny thing is that Chambers and Partners is not in question here as most people tell me that it is the only true unbiased lawyer ranking in the world.  And, it’s the database most GCs look to for information about potential outside counsel engagements in areas which they don’t already have relationships, such as new geographies or unusual specialties.

There’s no timeline on the results of the survey, as it is still in ‘information gathering mode’ but I am sure this one will be on the radar of many in the legal industry, particularly those at large firms that hire full-time staff simply to respond to rankings inquiries.

What do you think about awards and rankings? Had enough? Fed up? Or are they trusted and truly valuable marketing tools? I’d love to hear your two cents on the controversial topic.
